The Maldives is the Indian Ocean at its most improbable, 26 ring-shaped atolls of powder sand and lagoons in every shade of blue, barely rising above a mirror-calm sea. Ships call at the compact capital, Malé, and tender to uninhabited sandbanks and reef islands where the snorkelling begins at your ankles. It is the most laid-back landfall we sail to, and the most photogenic.
