Malé

Maldives

Malé

The compact, colourful capital of the atolls.

One of the world's smallest, most densely packed capitals, a bright, walkable island city.

Malé is unlike any other capital, a single, brightly painted island so small you can walk it end to end, ringed by a lagoon and the open Indian Ocean. The coral-stone Old Friday Mosque, the gold-domed Grand Friday Mosque, and the fish and produce markets give the morning its rhythm. It is the human counterpoint to the empty sandbanks that surround it.
