Portugal is a favourite turnaround country, and Lisbon is its charismatic centre, yellow trams climbing tiled hills, miradouro viewpoints, fado in the Alfama, and the custard tarts of Belém eaten warm where they were invented. The Atlantic light here is unlike anywhere on the Mediterranean. Sintra's palaces are a day trip inland.
